PROTECT COCKBURN SOUND AND GARDEN ISLAND FROM NUKE SUB DEVELOPMENT

Cockburn Sound and Garden Island are under threat from a major development proposal.

As SCS recently reported, The Department of Defence has recently submitted plans for significant infrastructure works at Garden Island in Cockburn Sound to meet the requirements of the AUKUS agreement. These works have the potential to drastically impact this sensitive marine environment.

Right now, the federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment, and Water (DCCEEW) is deciding whether to conduct a full environmental assessment of this project. This is our chance to ensure this development is properly scrutinised and every potential environmental risk is addressed.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Precious ecosystems

Cockburn Sound is a vital nursery for pink snapper and other marine life, while Garden Island is home to unique habitats that must be protected.

Cultural and recreational value

This area holds immense cultural, recreational, and environmental significance for generations of Western Australians.

Significant development impacts

The scale of the proposed Defence infrastructure works, driven by AUKUS requirements, could lead to long-term and possibly irreversible damage without careful planning and oversight.

Take action now

We need your voice to make sure the federal government understands how much this area means to all of us. Submissions are quick and easy to make, but they carry the power to ensure decision-makers prioritise the environment.

Say YES to a ‘controlled action’. A ‘controlled action’ is an action that the minister decides has, will have, or is likely to have, a significant impact on a protected matter. A ‘controlled action’ is assessed further before the Environment minister decides whether to approve it.
