SCS recently featured in the Financial Review with our fight for Cockburn Sound making waves at a national level.
Our friends and supporters at Recfishwest ran the full article on their website – you can read it by clicking here.
The Financial Review article details how an army of sailing clubs, environmentalists, fishers and others are banding together to dispute the enormous international project to give
Australia nuclear-powered submarines, with the base to be stationed at Garden Island (pictured below) in the heart of Cockburn Sound.

SCS was asked for comment in the Financial Review article which hovered the microscope over this controversial plan, and we had this to say:
“Cockburn Sound supports a huge range of family accessible recreational activities for fishers, sailors, boaties, divers, nature watchers and windsurfers right on Perth’s doorstep, giving enormous enjoyment and relaxation for thousands of West Aussies. However, the environment and amenity that supports all these activities is under increasing pressure from a range of industrial developments including AUKUS, the planned Westport Outer Harbour development and an 18m-deep shipping channel to be dredged through the heart of the Sound.
We have serious concerns about the ongoing industrialisation of the Sound and we call on State and Federal Governments, and all developers, to take responsibility to ensure these developments have minimal impact on the Sound’s environment and the activities we cherish.“
Not only does this publication show that we are starting to be noticed, it hopefully means that state and federal politicians – plus the developers – are starting to take note that we will not go away quietly!
Make sure you encourage your friends and family to support our page if you care about protecting the Sound and we will keep you updated on where we see the SCS army getting a mention in the media!
