With sheltered waters brimming with marine life, stunning beaches and glimpses of Garden and Carnac Island, Cockburn Sound offers a premier sailing experience for thousands of West Aussies.
This natural harbour, protected by Garden Island itself, provides ideal conditions for both novice and seasoned sailors as the island blocks a majority of the incoming winds and swell that would regularly make it too rough for boats.
One sailing club that has produced some of the most elite sailors in history and is one of the largest and most long-standing in the world is the Fremantle Sailing Club. The origin of sailing races in Fremantle goes back as far as 1870, when merchant ship owners and seafarers sailing in and out of Fremantle. As the demand for races continued, the North Fremantle Sailing Club was formed in 1897.
In 1900 this club changed its name to Fremantle Sailing Club and has since gone on to produce some of the best champion sailors in the world, with Cockburn Sound providing the best possible training ground with its accommodating winds and sheltered waters.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Western Australia (TCYC), located in Rockingham, is a central hub for sailing activities in the area. Each year, TCYC hosts the renowned Cockburn Sound Regatta, a highlight on the sailing calendar. The 67th edition of this event took place from December 26-30, 2024, featuring a variety of races such as Around the Buoys, Windward-Leeward, and Passage Races.
The regatta caters to a diverse range of vessels, including high-tech racers, cruisers, multihulls, and dinghies. Beyond the competitive sailing, participants and spectators enjoy a vibrant social program with live music, themed buffet meals and quiz nights, embodying the regatta’s motto: “Serious sailors having serious fun!”
Another prominent sailing institution is the Jervoise Bay Sailing Club. The club boasts a proud and long-standing association with the sport of sailing, offering facilities and events that cater to enthusiasts of all levels.

For those interested in powerboating, the Cockburn Power Boats Club at Woodman Point provides excellent amenities, including hardstand and pen boat storage. The club also features function rooms with sunset views, making it a favoured spot for both boating activities and social gatherings.
Not only do these clubs cater for your sailing needs, but they also contain avid angling sections if you enjoy wetting a line. The club members are incredibly helpful if you wish to learn more about catching your favourite species and spots on boats frequently open up for both sailing and fishing trips.
The combination of ideal sailing conditions and active clubs makes Cockburn Sound a vibrant centre for maritime enthusiasts. Whether you’re aiming to participate in competitive regattas, engage in leisurely sailing or just enjoy powerboating, the Sound offers a welcoming community of sailing clubs and excellent facilities to enhance your nautical pursuits.
